Used Tuxedos

What are used tuxedos?
Used tuxedos are men's formal garments that are (for lack of a better term) not new. They are used tuxedos.

Buying Used Tuxedos
Here are a few pointers on buying a used tuxedo. For starters, make sure the garment has been professionally dry cleaned. Second, check that all the buttons on the jacket match. Sometimes in rental store a button from another jacket is sewn on to replace buttons that have fallen off. So check for consistency.

Check the the stitching. Most likely there won't be any stitching problems but if you do find any, a tailor can fix it rather quickly.

The two most important things to look for in a used tuxedo are color and pilling. The color of the satin or grosgrain lapel should be consistent with the rest of the jacket. Meaning there shouldn't be much more of a difference than if the used tuxedo was new. Make very certain that the lapel is not dark purple because if this is the case, the jacket may have been damaged by the sun.

A used tuxedo can have pilling. Pilling is when little balls of fabric build up on the lapel, pocket flaps and really anywhere on the jacket. Some pilling can be shaven off just like with any clothing, however some may not. Check that any pilling is not the result of an oncoming hole in the material.

Used Tuxedo Fabrics
A used tuxedo from a private seller can be any fabric. So can a used tuxedo from a rental store however most likely find that the material used to make the garment is 100% worsted wool (unless otherwise noted). Worsted wool is a heavy wool and can take the most wear, hence it is used for rental. There is nothing wrong with the worsted wool other than it's heavier than the retail versions of the used tuxedo jacket. Make sure that the fabric is not stiff. If it is, it may be sun damaged.

If you really want to save time and worry, buy a new tuxedo, they start at $149.00 and there are plenty of options at that price. I think the best deal is to buy a designer label tuxedo for between $249 and $399. They truly are comfortable and look great. Especially because the fabrics are soft and they drape very nicely.
